Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra E flat major

Alla fine del XVIII secolo, il trombettista di corte viennese Anton Weidinger (1767–1852) inventò la “Klappentrompete” [tromba con tastiera], che permetteva alla tromba di suonare l'ottava in passi cromatici (mezzo passo).

Così nel 1796 Joseph Haydn compose il suo concerto per tromba in mi bemolle maggiore Hob. Vlle: 1, che oggi annovera tra le maggiori opere canoniche del suo genere, soprattutto per Weidinger.

I contemporanei hanno descritto il tono del Klappentrompete come morbido e delicato, e forse questo è il motivo per cui Haydn ha dato più valore ai temi lirici che alla brillantezza in questo concerto.

Per le esecuzioni odierne una tromba in si bemolle o anche un flicorno può essere una scelta migliore di una tromba in mi bemolle. Il testo musicale della nostra edizione è basato su quello della Haydn Complete Edition.

At the end of the 18th century, the Viennese court trumpeter Anton Weidinger (1767–1852) invented the “Klappentrompete” [keyed trumpet], which allowed the trumpet to play the octave in chromatic (half-step) steps.

Thus in 1796 Joseph Haydn composed his Trumpet Concerto in E-flat major Hob. Vlle:1, which numbers today among the major standard works of its genre, especially for Weidinger. Contemporaries described the tone of the Klappentrompete as soft and delicate, and perhaps this is why Haydn placed more value on lyrical themes than on brilliance in this concerto.

For performances today a B flat trumpet or even a flugelhorn may be a better choice than an E flat trumpet. The music text of our edition is based on that of the Haydn Complete Edition.
