La clemenza di Tito In full score (Partitura) Libretto by Caterino Mazzoli, based on the drama La clemenza di Tito by Pietro Metastasio Edizioni:Dover
Mozart was commissioned to write La Clemenza di Tito for the coronation of the soon-to-be-emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, Leopold II. Working with a libretto by Metastasio based on incidents in the life of the Roman emperor Titus, Mozart composed the opera during the same climactic period in which he completed the Requiem and The Magic Flute.
La Clemenza di Tito was first performed in Prague on September 6, 1791. (The first performance of The Magic Flute would follow a few weeks later in Vienna.) Whatever enjoyment Mozart and Leopold 11 may have derived from the opera, it was short-lived, for Mozart died in December 1791, and Leopold II shortly thereafter in 1792.
Long neglected but now frequently performed and recorded, this Mozart masterpiece is once again a popular favorite of opera audiences worldwide.
